The Luckenbach sank on July 14, 1953. With advances in oil 'fingerprinting' this vessel has now been implicated in the 2001-2002 incident listed here and in the 'Point Reyes Tarball Incident' in 1997-1998. In 2002, much of the remaining oil was removed from the vessel but an estimated 51,560 birds were killed by oil from this ship between 1990 and 2003, including more than 31,000 common murres and 45 endangered Marbled Murrelets. 8 sea otter deaths have also been linked to this accident.
Amount and type of oiled spilled:
Total amount of oil spilled is not known but the vessel was carrying 457,000 gallons of bunker fuel when it sank.
