ITOPF oil spill response film series online

A new International Tanker Owners Oil Pollution Federation (ITOPF) series of seven films will take viewers inside the world of oil spill response, where experts explain everything from the behaviour of different types of oil in the marine environment to response at sea to the environmental impacts of oil spills.

In the aftermath of an oil spill, the average person expects experts to immediately contain and clean up the oil, as it is difficult for anyone on the outside of the industry to truly grasp the complexity of a response where weather, type of oil and any number of other factors can have an impact on the effectiveness of cleanup activities. This video series will improve understanding of what goes into responses and increase appreciation for the difficulties in planning and executing an effective oil spill response.

The first two films in the series: Introduction to Oil Spills and Aerial Surveillance are live as of 2 May 2014. At-Sea Response will be accessible after 8 May. Four more films-Shoreline Clean-up, Waste Management, Environmental Impacts and Oil Spill Compensation- will go live in June. These films can’t be downloaded, however, DVDs will be available for purchase in June. For non-English speakers there will be versions subtitled in Arabic, Chinese, French, Korean and Spanish.

To view the films online and/or to be notified when the DVD versions are available, visit the ITOPF website’s Information Services section.
