More than 100 oiled mute swans were found along the River Thames on Friday June 21, 2013. Initial reports suggest that engine oil, illegally dumped into storm drains, may have been the source of this oiled wildlife incident.
Swan Lifeline, a UK charity, rescued and washed the birds. The Environment Agency is continuing to investigate the situation but it is unlikely a point source will be identified. No other wildlife has been reported to the agency as affected by the spill. Although it is not the first time swans have been oiled on the river, this is the largest number of birds rescued and treated from a single incident.
