In the first week after an oil pipeline break in the town of Mayflower, Arkansas, about a dozen animals have been brought into care. A variety of ducks and one muskrat were admitted to HAWK wildlife rehabilitation center over the last few days. As of Tuesday 2 May, Wildlife Response Services, a Texas based wildlife rescue group, has been brought in and a dedicated oiled wildlife response centre is being set up near the spill site.
Since the beginning of the spill 14 ducks, 1 muskrats and 2 turtles have been admitted for care. The animals from HAWK have been transferred to that facility for on-going care.
The Pegasus pipeline, carrying Canadian crude, ruptured on 29 March, 2013 spilling oil into a residential area not far from Lake Conway. Booms were put in place to prevent the spill reaching the lake. Approximately 12,000 barrels, which represents most of the free standing oil mixed with some water, have been recovered.
